This initiative, the single market emergency instrument (SMEI), aims to put in place a flexible and transparent mechanism to respond quickly to emergencies and crises that threaten the functioning of the single market. The initiative will ensure the coordination, solidarity and coherence of the EU crisis response and protect the single market’s functioning, ensuring: continued free movement of goods, services & people; smooth-running supply chains; and availability and access to goods & services. Due date: July 4th, 2022.

The report on the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Regulation aims to evaluate how effectively it contributes to enforcing EU consumer laws; as well as to inform possible future reflections on how to strengthen the CPC pan-European enforcement network to increase cross-border enforcement no matter where a trader is based, tackle unfair practices affecting certain business sectors, and make the network more resilient in a crisis (e.g. COVID-19). External power supplies are power adaptors used to convert electricity from household power mains into lower voltages. They power e.g. smartphones, loudspeakers and laptops. This initiative aims to review the EU rules on these devices that have been in force since 2020. Objectives include promoting interoperability, facilitating the USB power delivery protocol and improving information requirements to help consumers identify external power supplies/chargers that are suitable for their devices.

This initiative aims to tackle microplastics unintentionally released into the environment. It will focus on labelling, standardisation, certification and regulatory measures for the main sources of these plastics. It aims to improve the science on the risks and occurrence of microplastics in the environment, tap water and food; and to reduce environmental pollution and potential health risks, while respecting the principles of the single market and encouraging competitiveness and innovation. Due date: May 17th, 2022.

This initiative will propose EU rules on certifying carbon removals. It will develop the necessary rules to monitor, report and verify the authenticity of these removals. The aim is to expand sustainable carbon removals and encourage the use of innovative solutions to capture, recycle and store CO2 by farmers, foresters and industries. This represents a necessary and significant step towards integrating carbon removals into EU climate policies. Due date May 2nd, 2022.

A patent that protects technology essential to a standard is called a standard-essential patent (SEP). Patent-holders commit to licence their SEPs to users of the standard on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms and conditions. However, some users have found that the system for licensing SEPs is not transparent, predictable or efficient. This initiative seeks to create a fair and balanced licensing framework and may combine legislative and non-legislative action. Due date May 9th, 2022.

In 2013, the EU adopted an ecodesign measure on vacuum cleaners that set minimum energy efficiency requirements. This led to substantial energy savings for consumers. This initiative will review the measure in light of technological progress and assess whether to include battery-operated and robot vacuum cleaners, as well as whether to set requirements for materials and the lifetime of vacuum cleaners.

In 2013, the EU adopted an energy labelling measure to inform consumers of energy performance and other environmental parameters. It also adopted an ecodesign measure that sets minimum energy efficiency requirements. This initiative will review energy-labelling requirements for space and combination heaters in light of technological progress and market developments, the labelling rescaling requirement and the EU’s Green Deal commitment. Due date: March 31st, 2022.

The objectives of the Soil Health Law are focused on specifying the conditions for a healthy soil, on determinating options for monitoring soil, and on laying out rules conductive to sustainable soil use and restoration. The Waste Framework Directive protects public health and the environment through the proper management of waste. This is done by applying the EU’s waste hierarchy, which promotes waste prevention and re-use over waste recovery and disposal. This initiative will improve waste management by: reducing waste generation including through re-use of products or components and reducing mixed waste and increasing preparation for re-use or recycling of waste by improving separate collection.
