Yet success in this area has come at a significant environmental cost, and there is a growing recognition that trying to compete with cheaper imports will only encourage a race to the bottom. How we grow food in Europe will change, and must change to ensure a sustainable future.

Are plant height and shape genetic?

Are plant height and shape genetic?

Monday, 22 de November de 2021

The height of a plant has a major impact on crop yield. For example, because tall crops are more vulnerable to wind and rain, they are at a higher risk of falling over, thus reducing overall yields. To mitigate this risk, scientists have created shorter crops using changes in a group of genes called DELLAs. While these mutations have improved yields, they have also resulted in some unwanted side effects, such as increased sensitivity to dry conditions during seed germination.
