Turning viruses into biocontrol agents to combat the bacteria, fungi and insects that attack crops could reduce our dependence on chemicals and open the door to next generation pesticides. The aim of the VIROPLANT project therefore was to examine the potential of new biocontrol agents based on viruses that attack bacteria, fungi and insect pests.
While agricultural practices are known to compromise the quality of drinking water sources, farmers are reluctant to update their practices. As sources of nitrogen for crops, fertilisers and manures can leach into soil, polluting groundwater and surface water. While pesticides, used to protect crops from pests and disease, pollute surface water. Based on an understanding of farmers’ legitimate fears, the FAirWAY project introduced measures to better support a step change.

The International Waste Forum #wasteinprogress returns to Girona on May 18th-20th with a fourth edition that will focus on the role of the organic fraction in new waste collection models. Payment systems on generation, elements of identification and individualization or the problems associated with the management of organic matter -the most important fraction of municipal waste- will be some of the issues that will be addressed.
In this meeting, the Committee adopted by consensus, a positive opinion for a variation requiring assessment application (subject to worksharing procedure) concerning quality-related changes for Purevax RC, Purevax RCP FeLV, Purevax RCPCh FeLV, Purevax RCPCh, Purevax RCP. Moreover, between other adoptions, the Committee adopted by consensus, positive opinions for type II variation applications concerning quality-related changes for Bonqat (grouped), NexGard Spectra, Rabitec (grouped) and Suprelorin.
Our warming planet will lead to more frequent extremes in hot or dry weather. But what happens to make both droughts and heat waves occur together, and how does precipitation affect this? The researchers used output from an ensemble of seven climate models to investigate what the occurrence of compound hot–dry events depends on and to show how important a role precipitation trends play in the frequency of future compound events.
the Commission proposed a legislative amendment to the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-20 (EMFF), which would allow for additional crisis measures to support the EU fishery and aquaculture sectors in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It comprises financial compensation for additional costs, for income forgone and for the storage of products, as well as for the temporary cessation of fishing activities where they are currently unsafe.
The FOODRUS project has launched a detailed survey to collect data on food losses and waste and to identify new strategies that can limit these losses. The survey is designed for both business owners and employees of companies at different stages of food value chains worldwide. The objective of the survey is to identify opportunities for business symbiosis & circular flows, to detect food loss and waste prevention and valorization practices, and to collect data on food loss and waste generation
In response to the brutal aggression against Ukraine and its people, the European Commission has adopted a fifth package of restrictive measures against Russia. Together with the four previous packages, these sanctions will further contribute to ramping up economic pressure on the Kremlin and cripple its ability to finance its invasion of Ukraine. These include targeted export bans and the extending import bans.
A new high-protein microalgae strain developed by researchers has now been scaled up by Portuguese microalgae producer Allmicroalgae Natural Products as part of the EU-funded ProFuture project. The new Chlorella strain could be used to make vegan food products that not only are more nutritional but also taste better.
EU Green Week is an annual opportunity to debate European environmental policy with policymakers, leading environmentalists and stakeholders from Europe and beyond. This year's edition focuses on the European Green Deal - the EU’s sustainable and transformative growth strategy for a resource-efficient and climate-neutral Europe by 2050. EU Green Week 2022 will take place from 30 May to 5 June 2022.
Biostimulants, both natural products and micro-organisms, are novel and increasingly available, but not yet fully understood. INBIOS is an Operational Group from Italy which aims to test these products in combination with decision-support tool models and innovative agricultural cropping systems. The adoption of these complementary strategies should enhance the natural defences of plants and reduce the use of plant protection products, and increase resistance to water stress and other effects of climate change.
