Commission awards over 1 billion to innovative projects for the EU climate transition

The Commission has signed grant agreements of €1.1 billion with seven large-scale projects via the EU Innovation Fund, funded by revenues from the EU's Emissions Trading System (ETS). These projects aim to reduce emissions by over 76 Mt of CO2eq during the first ten years of operation. The seven projects are deploying innovative low-carbon technologies at industrial scale, covering key sectors such as hydrogen, steel, chemicals, cement, solar energy, biofuels, and carbon capture and storage.

1.5 billion for clean tech: 138 projects apply to the EU Innovation Funds second call for large-scale projects

The 138 project proposals come from almost all EU Member States as well as Norway and Iceland. The total funding requested amounts to EUR 12.1 billion. Of the applications received, around 15 are cross-sectoral, and over 50 projects produce at least two different products, such as e-fuels, chemicals, hydrogen, biofuels, electricity, or bio-based products. This shows the wide scope of the Innovation Fund and the extensive contribution it can make to the decarbonisation pathways of multiple sectors, regions and Member States.

The Commission is tabling a legislative proposal, introducing a minimum 80% gas storage level obligation for next winter to ensure security of energy supply, rising to 90% for the following years. o address concerns about continued high energy prices, the Commission has also adopted a Communication setting out the options for market intervention at European and national level, and assessing the pros and cons of each option.

President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden have committed to work together to support Europe's energy security for the coming winters and to sustainably reduce Europe's energy dependency on Russia by investing in the clean energy transition. The United States will strive to ensure additional liquefied natural gas volumes for the EU market. Together the EU and US will make available stable, affordable, reliable and clean energy supplies to citizens and businesses in the EU and its neighbouring partner nations.

Among the many problems with plastic, it’s manufactured from a fossil resource. The BBI JU-funded EUCALIVA project has developed a sustainable alternative that grows on trees. Lignin is a natural polymer present in most plants. Since one of its main functions is stiffening, rigid plants such as trees generally contain large amounts. It can be the source material for certain polymer products currently having a petroleum base. Lignin is also abundant enough to replace that source.

Following up rapidly on the REPowerEU Communication and the Versailles Declaration, the Commission has set out ideas for collective European action to address the root causes of the problem in the gas market and ensure security of supply at reasonable prices for next winter and beyond. Moreover, a new State Aid Temporary Crisis Framework has been adopted, enabling support for undertakings directly or indirectly affected by the economic impacts of the war in Ukraine, in the form of limited direct grants, liquidity support and aid for increased gas and electricity costs.

In 2020, under the German EU Council Presidency, the European research ministers agreed to launch a joint Research and Innovation Initiative on Green Hydrogen, as part of their efforts to implement a first European Research Area pilot on green hydrogen. Following a set of workshops and a publication consultation in 2021, the task force presented its Research & Innovation Strategic Agenda on 18 March 2022.

The European Investment Fund (EIF) and Resilience Partners, a private debt firm, have partnered to provide financing support and flexibility to high-growth Spanish and European SMEs. In view of the large demand from companies with financial needs, the Resilience Partners Fund II, S.C.A., SICAR has achieved a first close and expects to mobilise a total of €150-200 million in financing to these companies.

The EC has approved under EU State aid rules Spain's map for granting regional aid  within the framework of the revised Regional aid Guidelines ('RAG'). The revised RAG, enable Member States to support the least favoured European regions in catching up and to reduce disparities in terms of economic well-being, income and unemployment. They also provide increased possibilities to support regions facing transition or structural challenges such as depopulation, to contribute fully to the green and digital transitions.

The Commission has approved the disbursement of more than €2 billion under the Brexit Adjustment Reserve to a group of 12 Member States. This decision will make available a total of €819.2 million by the end of March 2022 and the rest by April 2023. This funding will help the economies of the Member States in mitigating the adverse impact of Brexit on their economies and regions, through support to regions and economic sectors, small and medium sized companies as well as job creation and protection, such as short-time work schemes, re-skilling, and training.

The European Commission has today proposed an outline of a plan to make Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels well before 2030, starting with gas. This plan also outlines a series of measures to respond to rising energy prices in Europe and to replenish gas stocks for next winter. REPowerEU will seek to diversify gas supplies, speed up the roll-out of renewable gases and replace gas in heating and power generation.
