A groundbreaking study into how the production, trade and consumption of glass developed along political and cultural lines has helped shed new light on the cultural identities of medieval societies. The study of the emergence of glass industries could help reveal some of the mechanisms and motivations that drove technological transfer and innovation, as well as economic and cultural exchange in the medieval Mediterranean.
In this report, entitled "Emerging AI and Data Driven Business Models in Europe", the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) Artificial Intelligence Community answers questions such as what are the artificial intelligence business models in Europe, what is the current European landscape in terms of AI or what is the impact of AI in different sectors and in climate.
In this paper, the ETP ‘Food for Life’ shared R&I priorities are presented, in light of the anlayisis conducted to the Horizon Europe work programme 2021-2022 . These include alternative food sources, sustainable packaging, food safety, microbiome and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. However, there are still important R&I gaps that need to be addressed for the next Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2024 in order to achieve the policy goals set out in the Farm to Fork strategy or the Digital strategy among others.

EU agri-food trade figures for January-October 2021 show a 6% increase of its total value compared to the corresponding period last year. While imports rose by 4%, exports grew by 7%, resulting on a total agri-food trade surplus of €57.5 billion, a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2020. The largest growth of exports was to the United States, which was reported to be a 7%, especially due to the wine and liqueurs exports.
In their third Policy Brief ‘Industry 5.0: A Transformative Vision for Europe - Governing Systemic Transformations towards a Sustainable Industry’, the independent ESIR expert group recommends a deep transformation of the European Industry to foster the twin green and digital transition in Europe. This transformation will support Europe’s ambition to become more sustainable, resilient, regenerative and circular whilst living within planetary boundaries.
The European Commission has published the results of the first coordinated control plan on the authenticity of herbs and spices launched by Directorate-general for Health and Food Safety and carried out by 21 EU Member States, Switzerland and Norway. This was the first time national authorities in charge of food controls and the European Commission pooled their experience and resources together to focus on the herbs and spices sector. The goal was to protect consumers from misleading and potentially unsafe products.
Total agricultural land is due to slightly decline over the outlook period, with forest area exceeding agricultural land by 2031. EU cereal production is expected to decline, driven by a lower feed use. In contrast protein crops production will grow significantly, thanks to their environmental benefits. These are just a few of the projections from the European Union agricultural outlook for 2021-31 report published on 9 December 2021 by the European Commission.
The report titled Barriers and enablers for implementing circular economy business models - Evidence from the electrical and electronic equipment and agri-food value chains provides facts and data on barriers and enablers to the implementation of circular economy business models in two value chains that exhibit high levels of waste generation: electrical and electronic equipment and agri-food.
Fostering and sharing knowledge and innovation forms part of the post-2020 CAP cross-cutting objective on modernisation. It has a key role to play in helping farmers and rural communities meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. The EIP-AGRI Seminar 'CAP Strategic Plans: the key role of AKIS in Member States' focused on supporting Member States in the preparation of their AKIS Strategic Plans, and promoting efficient agricultural knowledge flows within the country and region as well as across the whole EU.
Agriculture is a key sector for reaching climate neutrality by 2050, as it is able both to reduce emissions and to store carbon and offset emissions from farming systems but also emissions from other sectors. This final report gives an overview of the discussions and results from the workshop.
The new EU forest strategy for 2030 is one of the flagship initiatives of the European Green Deal and builds on the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030. The strategy will contribute to achieving the EU’s biodiversity objectives as well as greenhouse gas emission reduction target of at least 55% by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.
